Unspoilt campsites hidden away from barely used roads alongside crystal clear creeks and rivers. Wonderfully warm sunny days followed by cold crisp nights, where your only company are the billions of stars in the sky. Breathtaking lookouts and a mix of challenging and relaxed 4WDing. This is what you can expect from a visit to the NSW Snowy Mountains. The NSW Snowy Mountains are most famous for their snowfields. It is obvious as you start to get close that the local community’s largest source of income is the snow trade (there’s snow business like snow business). What a lot of people don’t realise, however, is how much great 4WDing there is around the area. In such close proximity to the Victorian High Country, it is easy to just skip the NSW bit and cross the Murray as quickly as possible. But if you can manage a few extra days annual leave or even dedicate a long weekend, the 4WDing in and around the Kosciuszko National Park will have you visiting the area in both summer and winter. We started our trip from the Wee Jasper Valley. Only an hour or so from Canberra and about four from Sydney, there are five or six great (and very popular) campsites scattered alongside the main road on your way in. We managed to snag a great site, out of the way of everyone else, where the only sound we had to contend with was the water of the Micalong Creek tumbling over the rocks. Fees are payable for camping, so make sure you stop in at the ranger’s station on your way in or out. If you have some time up your sleeve, there are plenty of things to see and do around Wee Jasper, like visit Carey’s Cave or try your luck at trout fishing. From here until you get to Jindabyne, almost the whole way is via dirt roads and 4WD-only tracks. You will need to be pretty self-sufficient as none of the campsites have a reliable source of fresh water. Leaving any of the campsites in the Wee Jasper Valley, there are countless different ways to get to the Kosciuszko National Park. We think we headed along Barnetts Road through the Bondo State Forest, but even to this day we aren’t really sure. Most roads that head in a southerly direction will generally take you to Long Plain Road eventually. We actually spent most of that first day exploring side tracks, taking wrong turns and having a blast, until we realised we hadn’t even covered half of the distance we needed to make it to our proposed campsite before dark. We can recommend checking out the Broken Cart trail down to Dubbo Flats if you are interested in having a bit of fun in the mud, or checking out any of the 100 or so huts scattered around the park.
